THE GROWTH RINGS

The Growth Rings were a concept first introduced in Bill’s TEDx Talk and made popular in his book, The Coaching Effect. They are a conceptual way to think about the role comfort, challenge, and our potential play in our everyday lives. Whether you are a business leader, team member, teacher, student, coach, spouse, or parent, it is essential to understand where you, as well as your peers, are currently located within the four Growth Rings environments. These environments include Stagnation, Order, Complexity, and Chaos, and they impact how much - or how little - we ultimately grow.

Learn which ring you're in by taking our Growth Rings Indicator Quiz, and use our helpful guide to learn how to navigate the Growth Rings.

The Growth Rings

The Growth Rings have made me more aware of helping people embrace what may be scary and unknown in order not to deprive them of the opportunity to grow and experience the joy that comes through struggling.

The Sweet Spot

We believe that having an understanding of The Growth Rings and the current ring you are working and living in will help you increase your performance and potential. Within these four rings is a spot that provides the best setting for high growth: the Complexity ring.

Here, growth happens when Order is changed or challenged. At the same time, Complexity can only be productive when it doesn’t snowball into Chaos. Some people feel uncomfortable in the Complexity Ring because Complexity brings unpredictable situations and experiences. This discomfort can lead to exponential growth for you, your team members, your business, and others around you.

We encourage individuals to understand where they currently are within the Growth Rings, to explore ways to introduce or navigate Complexity, and to grow to their fullest potential.

I think the best decision I ever made was to get #OutofOrder and apply to medical school. The insights I learned from the Growth Rings helped me make that decision. How can you know what you’re capable of until you throw yourself into discomfort?
